Culinary heritage – Vegetarian Soljanka

September 23, 2017 by nadel&gabel

Soljanka – a hearty dish that was omnipresent on our trip through Saxony, Brandenburg and Thuringia. It probably is the best known Russian soup besides Borschtsch. It’s popular all around Eastern Europe and exists in uncountable variations. In Germany the popularity basically is limited to the eastern part of the country. 40 years of separation into two different states left its traces – by far not only, but as well in terms of culinary traditions. Due to ‘socialist brotherhood’ a […]

Comforting and nourishing – German potato soup

January 10, 2016 by nadel&gabel

Hello again! I hope everyone had a good start into 2016! Actually I’ve ment to report back here sooner, but the new year started with some left over work from the old one … 😦 Anyway, I don’t want to start the new complaining. I had great days with my family and friends, yummy food and I enjoyed to be mostly cooked for. We had time to think about the new year, plans, wishes, hopes, while the weather outside … […]

Cause it’s fun – Waffled pita sandwich with sucuk

May 16, 2015 by nadel&gabel

Foodwise the last weeks weren’t quite the healthiest ones – unless you’d call sandwiches with different toppings a varied and balanced diet. Although the homemade ones definitely were better than the ones from the bakery, smeared with loads of butter. Especially the numerous Bánh mì dinners. So, it basically suggested itself that this post would be dedicated to a sandwich. *Yawn*? No, it’s not a normal sandwich. It’s a waffled sandwich! “Is she really putting a sandwich into a waffle […]

Feed a crowd – Winter Chili con carne à la Jamie

December 6, 2014 by nadel&gabel

Chili con carne … for me is kind of synonymous for food in huge pots feeding crowds – the classic recipe that was cooked in youth camps, on school trips, big partys. You only needed one big pot. Everyone could do it (somehow) and you could cook together: someone chopped masses of bell peppers, another one onions until his/her face was covered in tears, someone stir-fried minced beef … and the less talented at least could open the cans of […]

Fusion meal – Palak daal with roasted cauliflower, sesame mint dip and chapati bread

November 6, 2013 by nadel&gabel

This recipe is not only a singular dish, it is a whole menu, full of my favourite ingredients and flavours – obviously inspired by Indian as well as Arab cuisine. It’s a combination as well of different texture and temperature, that really works well: Crispy cold or lukewarm chapati bread, creamy warm roasted cauliflower, bread and cauliflower both with a nice smoky taste. This is paired with creamy sweet lentil and spinat daal and contrasting fresh nutty-tart sesame mint joghurt. […]

Food blogs I love: @ Downunder

September 30, 2013 by nadel&gabel

It’s already 11 years – an ingredibly long time – ago, since I’ve been to New Zealand for work and travel. Besides my memories and the hope to visit this remote (from a European perspective) country  again, I kept a lasting affinity for it. Although this isn’t all, one reason for me to read Vivianes blog @ Downunder is to keep somehow connected to the “land of the long white cloud”. Vivianes pictures bring together the land, its people and […]

Goodbye Maggi, Knorr & Co – My homemade vegetable stock powder

November 13, 2011 by nadel&gabel

Are you always reading the list of contents of the food you are just about to buy? Eating no convenience products? I am not. I’m not proud of it, but I’m not that consequent as I would like to be. I try to eat healthy, cook with natural ingredients and avoid all the flavour enhancers, artificial colour, flavour, stabilisers etc.. But then this is not always that easy as a consumer. Organisations like foodwatch or sites like the German Das […]
