At its peak – Summer chicken salad

August 13, 2017 by nadel&gabel

This summer somehow is an up and down. Grey, rainy and rather cold were the last days. It seemed like autumn already was entering the field. But like so often this summer the warming sun broke through the clouds, fought her way back. And her light pushed aside all the grey. I always feel that this time of summer is a double-edged sword. It’s on its peak, the plenty of ripe fruits and vegetables is overwhelming. Now they’re best, juicy […]

Summer sandwich – Easy Chicken Bánh Mì

June 28, 2015 by nadel&gabel

After talking a lot about Bánh Mì lately, I guess it’s time now to provide you with a recipe – although it is more rough notes than exact quantities. Bánh Mì – the Vietnamese adaption of a baguette sandwich – can be made in numerous variations. With or without pâté, with grilled pork, chicken or tofu, with different pickled vegetables. The essential ingredients that make a Bánh Mì a Bánh Mì are: baguette (crunchy outside, soft inside), sweet and sour […]

Dream garden – Romance needs hard work

June 25, 2014 by nadel&gabel

Last week my mother celebrated her birthday – a good occasion for a short stay at my parent’s house. As it is a family tradition the birthday was celebrated with old friends … and with my fathers homemade pizza – made in his DIY pizza oven! … Famous all around the village! It was – like always – a delight. My parent’s vast garden right now is in its full summer blossom, its abundance and beauty overwhelming. Veggies, flowers, berries […]

Summer on your plate – Pizza with chicken, peaches, goat cream cheese, thyme & honey

August 6, 2013 by nadel&gabel

I’ve counted: this is the third pizza recipe on this blog. No other dish is so present here (If you also count tarte flambée, it’s the fifth). However, when you consider how often we eat pizza, this is actually not very much. In fact, about once a week it’s a What-should-I–cook–today-oh-let’s-make-pizza-day. Although a lot of people find baking pizza frightening and complicated, I think it’s one of fastest, easiest and most versatile dishes. Cause I make pizza on such a […]

Ethiopian meal with injera

January 19, 2012 by nadel&gabel

Oh yes, it took some time to finish this post. But now, finally, it is here, hopefully inspiring you to expand our culinary experiences like I did. Rather by accident I first came into contact with ethopian food in the hidden Addis restaurant in London. I wanted more! I especially wanted to create these unique flavours myself at home. So I started to read a bit about african cuisine in general an ethophian culinary culture in particular. Finally I started […]

Birthday buffet

June 15, 2011 by nadel&gabel

It was only a few days before my fathers birthday party last weekend – a “small” one, only about 20 guests – that I had to realise that I was meant not only to help with all the preparations, but that I was supposed to plan and cook the whole buffet, with my sisters support. “Something mediterranean, but not too exotic” were my fathers instructions …  so that is what I made:

Categories: bread, dairy-free, grains & legumes, meat, salad, snacks & small dishes, spread, sauce & spice, vegetable, vegetarian • Tags: almond, anchovies, baking, börek, bell pepper, bread, caper, chicken, chickpea, cooking, couscous, feta cheese, food, italian, lemon, mayonnaise, mediterranean, olive oil, oriental, polenta, recipe, ricotta cheese, salad, sauce, spanish, tuna, veal, walnut

Fava bean salad with grilled chicken

June 2, 2011 by nadel&gabel

In southern Germany, where I come from, fava beans are called “Saubohnen” (sow beans) – not a very promising name. No wonder that I didn’t encounter those beans in my previous culinary experiences.
