The other Rome

June 1, 2018 by nadel&gabel

If you follow me on Instagram you already know about my short trip to Rome, not a leisure trip but a studies excursion with students focusing on art and history. If you’ve been to Rome before or even if you haven’t been you probably know that attractions in Rome are basically endless. There are so many “must see’s” that you can easily feel overwhelmed… the masses of tourists do their part as well. Here is a short overview to some […]

Attention – Japanese style comfy trousers

August 18, 2016 by nadel&gabel

In being confronted with the contingencies of the real world, “the world beyond our head”, f.ex. in concentrating on crafting we can gain back some autonomy in the modern world of omnipresent distraction… that’s the thesis of Matthew B. Crawford in his thoughtful and inspiring new work. One of Crawfords examples is the concentrated, coordinated work of a professional chef. An example that absolutely makes sense to me. I’ve always felt that working with my hands, making things – concrete, touchable […]

Peace at the mountain – Hiding away in Bad Gastein

April 11, 2016 by nadel&gabel

When we had planned our stay at Bad Gastein we thought that Easter would be a good time for a little timeout. We didn’t know then how urgently we really would need a break. So our plan for our short Easter holiday in Bad Gastein was to do mainly … nothing! And beyond the seven mountains among the seven dwarves… … we found the perfect hideaway, the Hotel “Miramonte“: A former “Kurhotel” (spa hotel) build at the turn of the century, […]

Ornamental christmas tradition – Springerle

December 6, 2015 by nadel&gabel

With christmas time – besides other things – I associate the following situation: I’m coming back to my parent’s home from the cold snowy outside, putting on my knitted socks, leaning my back to the tiled stove and warming my stiff cold fingers with a cup of hot tea. In between taking sips of the hot tea, I am dipping my Springerle cookie into it, let it soak and take a bite. Finally the fingers have warmed, the stomach as well, […]

South Tyrol III: Mediterranean gardens, thermal water and fine dining in Meran

May 7, 2014 by nadel&gabel

Apple of discord and melting pot – central and on the periphery: South Tyrol has always be all of it – when it comes to politics, geography, language or the broad field of culture. And no matter if the different influences have melted, coexist or are in conflict – it’s a rich, vivid, in-tense region. The picture above may be symptomatic for this: a perfect espresso next to a slice of Apfelstrudel – and it’s a perfect match! In the […]

South Tyrol II: Ottmanngut – An elegant Belle Époque oasis in Meran

May 1, 2014 by nadel&gabel

Imagine a stunning panorama view on palms, vineyards and snow covered mountains – all at once, imagine a magical garden full of citrus fruit trees, herbs and flowers, imagine a calm and elegant villa that breathes history, imagine tasteful and and artful food, imagine thoughtful and caring people … just a dream? No, all of this can be found in the recently reopenend Ottmanngut in Meran, where we’ve been lucky to stay during our spring break in South Tyrol. This […]

…and even more Bauhaus

April 1, 2013 by nadel&gabel

After years of planing to do this, we finally visited the Weissenhofsiedlung and museum in Stuttgart this Easter weekend. Definitely worth a visit! It was developed as a showcase of a “new living” (Neues Wohnen) in the 1920s by the “Deutscher Werkbund” (remember the similar project of the Austrian “Werkbund”?) and the city of Stuttgart. The initiative came from no other than Ludwig Mies van der Rohe – yes, the one who designed the German pavillon on the 1929 World […]
